Rechavam's harsh response to the people causes ten tribes to rebel, splitting the kingdom and leading Yerovam to build golden calves.
The people ask Shlomo's son, Rechavam, to lighten their labor burden. Ignoring the elders' advice, Rechavam answers harshly, causing the northern tribes to rebel and crown Yerovam king of Yisrael. To prevent his people from returning to Yerushalayim, Yerovam constructs two golden calves in Beit El and Dan, instituting a rival idolatrous priesthood.
