Dovid orders Yoav to conduct a census of Yisrael, but is struck with guilt afterward. The prophet Gad offers him three divine punishments; Dovid chooses a plague, and 70,000 men die. Dovid halts the destruction by purchasing Aravnah's threshing floor and building a mizbeach, which becomes the site of the future Temple.
