Yishmael assassinates Gedalyahu and takes captives, but Yochanan rescues them.

Ignoring the warnings, Gedalyahu hosts Yishmael, who treacherously murders him and the Babylonian garrison. Yishmael then slaughters 70 pilgrims and throws their bodies in a cistern. He takes the rest of the people in Mitzpah captive and heads toward Amon. Yochanan intercepts Yishmael, rescuing the captives, though Yishmael escapes. Fearing Babylonian retaliation, Yochanan's group prepares to flee to Mitzrayim.
