Yeshayahu (Isaiah) — Perek 58

The true meaning of fasting: freeing the oppressed, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, and honoring the holy Sabbath.

The prophet is commanded to cry aloud like a shofar against the people who fast and afflict their bodies while engaging in strife, oppression, and worker exploitation. True fasting chosen by Hashem consists of breaking chains of wickedness, freeing the oppressed, sharing bread with the hungry, and clothing the naked. Those who perform these deeds and honor the Sabbath as a delight will experience light bursting like the dawn and ride on the heights of the earth.
