King Tzidkiyahu sends an envoy during the siege, but Yirmiyahu tells them to surrender to Bavel.

As Nevuchadnetzar besieges the city, King Tzidkiyahu sends messengers asking Yirmiyahu to inquire of Hashem, hoping for a miracle. Hashem's response is devastating: He Himself will fight against Yerushalayim. The people are offered the 'way of life and the way of death' — those who surrender to the Chaldeans will live, but those who remain in the city will die.
