Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) — Perek 38

Yirmiyahu is thrown into a muddy pit to die, but is courageously rescued by Eved-melech the Cushite.

The princes convince Tzidkiyahu that Yirmiyahu's prophecies of surrender are demoralizing the troops. They lower the prophet into Malchiyahu's cistern, which has no water but deep mud, leaving him to starve. An Ethiopian official, Eved-melech, boldly intercedes with the king and rescues Yirmiyahu using rags and ropes. Yirmiyahu has a final, secret meeting with Tzidkiyahu, begging him to surrender.
